K-5 Physical Education

Physical Education Mission Statement

Physical Education encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, physical fitness, motor skills, social skills and positive attitudes that foster and empower students to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity as a foundation for a healthy, productive and fulfilling life.
Our effort on the elementary level is to form a foundation for the development of a physically educated person. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education defines a physically educated individual as one wh

  • Has learned skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities
  • Is physically fit
  • Participates regularly in physical activity
  • Knows the implications and benefits of involvement in physical activities
  • Values physical activity and its contribution to a healthful lifestyle

In elementary physical education, students take part in developmentally appropriate and sequentially based activities and experiences as an essential part of the total educational process, and which contributes to the growth and development of the individual child. In kindergarten to second grade, the emphasis is on learning basic movement and motor skills, developing the basics and understanding healthy fitness levels, and providing opportunities to develop effective personal and social skills. The third through fifth grade program further develops a broad spectrum of physical skills, and the knowledge necessary to use these skills and maintain fitness for a lifetime of active participation.
